Sesame Seared Tuna, 3 Veggie Stir Fry

If you’ve never seared off a fresh tuna steak, it may seem a bit intimidating. However, it really is a super simple and quick option for busy weeknight dinners.  One steak is more than enough tuna for two people and we always split one between us, which really makes this a budget friendly menu as well. There’s no real secret tip or trick about searing the tuna except make sure the pan is nice and hot and don’t touch the steak for at least 2 to 3 minutes once it’s placed in the pan. How rare or well done you serve the tuna is totally up to you and so cooking times will vary.

Ingredients:

For the Tuna –

1 tuna steak (serves two)

1 tablespoon low sodium Soy Sauce

1 tablespoon Hoisin Sauce

1 tablespoon Toasted Sesame Oil

2 to 3 tablespoons toasted Sesame Seeds

Salt and Pepper to taste

For the Stir Fry –

1 cup green beans, trimmed and chopped in half

1 cup Carrots, trimmed and sliced

1 cup Radish, trimmed and sliced

1 in fresh ginger, grated

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1 tablespoon Toasted Sesame oil

1/4 cup low sodium Soy Sauce

1 tablespoon Hoisin Sauce

1 tablespoon Chinese 5 Spice Powder

2 dried chile de Arbol, optional

Salt and Pepper

Method:

In small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and toasted sesame oil until well combined. In a shallow glass dish place the tuna and coat each side with a pinch of salt and pepper. Gently press in the seasoning. Pour the soy sauce mixture over the tuna and set aside. While the tuna is marinating, begin the stir fry by heating a wok or skillet over a medium high flame. Add the sesame oil to the pan and once simmering add the chile (if using), ginger and garlic. Saute about a minute then add in the carrots. Saute the carrots a few minutes more then stir in the green beans and radish. Add next the soy sauce, hoisin sauce and Chinese 5 spice powder. Continue cooking until the veggies are tender and the soy/hoisin sauce has thickened. Turn off heat and cover with a lid or aluminum foil. Now heat a non stick skillet over high heat until it is smoking hot. Place the toasted sesame seeds in a plate or on a cutting board and gently press the marinated tuna into the seeds until well coated. Carefully drop the tuna into the hot pan and sear about 3 minutes per side. Once seared, remove to a cutting board and allow the tuna to rest a few minutes. Slice the tuna into bite size pieces and serve with the 3 veggie stir fry.
